Introduction to division

This division of study aims to identify issues related to women's health, perinatal and childcare practices across all life cycles, and to seek for evidence that can lead to their solutions. The diverse role of a midwife encompasses duties and obligations relating not only to pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and childcare, but also the women themselves, as well as their families. We are committed to developing practical nursing skills and fostering nursing researchers with the competencies, and the foundations which underlie such abilities, to grow over life-long vocations as nurses. We realize this commitment by taking a broad view of maternal nursing to cater to demands of the current times and society, and addressing the challenges which will allow us to achieve our goals.

The research themes currently being conducted are: child-rearing practices of women in Japan and the U.K. that exist on the borderline of abuse when framed through narratives; physician's perceptions of physician-midwife collaboration during childbirth; the duration and mother-infant prevalence rates of the second stage of labor in natural childbirth; and midwive's perceptions and care practices regarding prenatal screening in early pregnancy, which are developed through international joint research and in collaboration with researchers at other institutions.

As a place where knowledge that transforms society is created, we offer education through a combination of lectures, group discussions, and other teaching methods to integrate knowledge and skills.

Please note that our university does not offer a program to obtain the national examination certification for midwifery.
